The constitution in Romania is a written one. The first constitution of Romania was adopted on the 1th of July 1866, resembling the belgian constitution from 1831. After the territory extended in 1918, a new constitution was approved on 29 March 1923. In the communist period, a further of three constitution were adopted, the first in 1948, after the soviet model, with subsequent variants appearing in 1952 and 1965. After the revolution in 1989, a new constitution was ratified in September 1991. The 1991 Constitution enshrined the return to democracy after the fall of the communist regime. This was later revised and modified in 2003, without substantial changes.
