In 2014, both in Scotland and in Catalonia took place political confrontations to support independence which differ primarily by means of preventing the referendum of the Spanish government, but also because one is a region of a country and the other is state.

In the Scottish independence referendum Scotland citizens were asked whether they want their country to become independent, thus left the composition of United Kingdom. The referendum was held on September 18, 2014. The question posed in the referendum was "Scotland should be an independent state. The plebiscite had the right to participate with few exceptions all British citizens, Community or the European Union, residing in Scotland and is older than 16 years. From a total of 4,285,323 persons registered who have voting rights participated in the referendum 84.59%, of which 55.3% voted "No", and 44.7% - "Yes." The composition remained in Scotland United Kingdom.

If the outcome of the referendum, the majority of citizens vote "for" Scotland, could have been officially declared independent.

The main problems are the economic power of the Scottish referendum arrangements defense, continued relationships with the rest of Great Britain, and membership in international organizations, especially the European Union and NATO. In most areas voted "No", just Dundee, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire voting "Yes". 84.6% Turnout was particularly high for Scotland - by referendum, parliamentary elections in Scotland and the UK in the twenty-first century, the presence of the usual average of 50-60%. The most recent general election in the UK with a presence comparable occurred in 1950, 83.9% of the population sing voting participated in elections. The most recent elections in the kingdom with an attendance of over 84.6% occurred in January 1910 when only men had the right to vote (before age limit application of universal suffrage in the United Kingdom. For many Scottish historic referendums on September 18 is not just a matter of economics and politics. Hold also their cultural and national identity. In where Scotland would detach from the United Kingdom would be a financial disaster for the new State structure because it would produce a monetary confusion.

Not long ago, in 1999, the leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party (NSP), Alex Salmond, asset-pound described as "a millstone tied around the neck of Scotland" and ridicule the current currency. Today, he is desperate to keep in Scotland independence, realizing that an own currency would be so volatile and so many headaches would give foreign investors that they would refuse to trade with the new state, putting its economy at risk since at first. Before the referendum after which the Scots will decide if they remain with the Kingdom or choose the path of independence, currency issue has become one of the most discussed topics of political leaders from Edinburgh. Although economic analysts believe that the best new state economy as it would be to keep the pound, more voices from London vehemently declared their opposition.
