Non-verbal communication is the process of communicating through gestures, body language, posture, facial expression and eye contact.
Nonverbal communication ranges from facial expression to body language. Gestures, signs, and use of space are also important in nonverbal communication. Multicultural differences in body language, facial expression, use of space, and especially, gestures, are enormous and enormously open to misinterpretation.
Well, we're always told not to "judge a book by its cover", but we always seem to do it, often sub-consciously.
Is the dress code a part of nonverbal communication?
Every organisation has a
set dress code to be followed
by all employees irrespective
of position in the hierarchy.
Employees should adhere to the defined dress code. Not conforming to company norms is considered unethical. It also indicates a sense of flippancy and a casual attitude.
Most of the times it is important to be rightly and neatly dressed but not always be well-dressed. Wearing clean footwear is also a part of sartorial discipline.
The suit must be dark, conservative, 2 or 3 button suit.
The shirt must be a white cotton long sleeves shirt, worn with white undershirt.
The tie: choose something that coordinates with the color of the suit, in a simple pattern or a solid color, preferably silk. Don’t use a bow tie.
The shoes are black, well polished laced shoes, worn with black socks.
The accessories: leather notebook, portfolio or briefcase.
The overall look has to be clean and neat. Haircut, clean nails, little or no fragrance, no visible body art or piercing.
