One of the first objectives of an English student is the development of a basic vocabulary. This should include basic groups of words such as pronouns, nouns, articles, adjectives, adverbs, some verbs, auxiliaries, interrogatives, etc. Also, this vocabulary should also include words that are required in our fundamental daily activities.

After acquiring a basic vocabulary, we can start thinking about an advanced vocabulary. This should include more detailed expressions of our daily lives, words related to a higher cultural understanding of the language and terminology related to a personal profession.

We cannot forget the importance of correct sentence structure. Sentences are constructed with words. You cannot form sentences putting words in any order you please. Correct language is using the appropriate words within an accepted structure.

Vocabulary and language are life-long activities. Building a basic and advanced vocabulary in English is a significant task for all serious professionals. In order to participate effectively in the new global world, you must have a vocabulary that represents your professional position. You will be categorized by the words you employ and the manner you express yourself. Words and language are serious business.

Language is one of the highest forms of human expression we posses. We speak by uttering sounds and write by making marks on paper. With these grunts and markings we are able to communicate simple and somewhat complicated ideas.

Communication is not always easy. We can take definitions from a dictionary and construct basic sentences but sometimes we need to take words or groups of words and extend their meanings beyond their literal significance. Thus, we have the creation of idiomatic expressions or idioms, and set expressions.

Set expressions have existed since the beginning of language. Daily we use idioms that are hundreds of years old. At the same time, many expressions used in the past are not used today.

As our lives proceed we need new expressions to reflect the changing world we live in. New ideas in science, technology, economics or politics demand new words and phrases. Language is a never-ending process of transition using old words and creating new words that reflect the present world we live in.

PHRASEOLOGY

Word-groups viewed as functionally and semantically inseparable units are traditionally regarded as the subject matter of phraseology. The word "phraseology" has very different meanings in this country and abroad. The term has ??m? to be used for the whole ensemble of expressions where the meaning of one element is dependent on the other, irrespective of the structure and properties of the unit. Some authors insist that the term of phraseology is applicable only to what they call fixed context units, i.e. units in which it is impossible to substitute any of the components without changing the meaning not only of the whole unit but also of the elements that remain intact, also they focus on the semantic integrity of such phrases prevailing over the structural separateness of their elements. All these authors use the same word "phraseology' to denote the branch of linguistics studying the word-
