Centrul Educatia 2000+ este o organizatie neguvernamentala, non-profit, independenta, ce ofera consultanta si servicii educationale. Centrul - creat in decembrie 1999 - face parte din Soros Open Network, cea mai importanta retea de organizatii neguvernamentale si civice din Romania.
- De la Asociatia Fundatia Soros pentru o Societate Deschisa la SON (Soros Open Network Romania): Sprijinul pentru dezvoltarea Romaniei ca societate deschisa dateaza inca din 1990, cand s-a infiintat Asociatia Fundatia Soros pentru o Societate Deschisa.
In urma schimbarilor legislative si de management, in 1997 aceasta s-a transformat in Fundatia pentru o Societate Deschisa.
Schimbarile politice care au avut loc in Europa Centrala si de Est in preajma anului 1990 au atras atentia omului de afaceri si filantropului George Soros, care promova valorile si idealul societatii deschise si era deja interesat de procesul de tranzitie de la o societate inchisa la una deschisa.
Pentru Romania, angajamentul lui George Soros a insemnat infiintarea, in anul 1990, a Fundatiei Soros pentru o Societate Deschisa, cu un buget initial de aproximativ 1, 480, 000 USD si cu mandatul de a dezvolta programe prin care sa suplineasca rapid si eficient lipsa initiativelor civice si a alternativelor educationale. Intre 1990 si 1994, Fundatia si-a continuat activitatea pe aceasta directie, nu numai prin programele proprii, prin care oferea burse de studiu, ci printr-o colaborare sustinuta cu Ministerul Educatiei Nationale in vederea informatizarii institutiilor educationale si elaborarii manualelor alternative. In toata aceasta perioada, principalele domenii de interes ale Fundatiei au fost educatia, sprijinirea societatii civile, sprijinirea culturii, politicile de sanatate si reforma in domeniul medical. Bugetul disponibile pentru atingerea acestor obiective creste progresiv, atingand aproximativ 10, 000, 000 USD in 1994. Anii 1994-1995 inseamna o schimbare in strategia Fundatiei, care realizeaza ca rolul sau este acela de a crea oportunitati si de a deschide drumuri, si nu de a le construi in intregime. Schimbarea de strategie aduce dupa sine o schimbare de structura organizationala, si delinierea unor proceduri si responsabilitati mai precise pentru Consiliul National, echipa manageriala, si juriile programelor. Domeniile principale de activitate raman in continuare educatia, societatea civila, comunicarea, cultura si sanatatea. Procesul de reinnoire al Fundatiei continua, in paralel cu schimbarile care au loc in societatea romaneasca, si duce, in anul 1997, la nasterea unei noi institutii, Fundatia pentru o Societate Deschisa.
Fundatia, a carei misiune a ramas cea de a sprijini dezvoltarea unei societati deschise in Romania, si-a concentrat atentia pe patru domenii prioritare administratia publica, reforma legislativa si juridica, invatamantul primar si secundar si sanatatea publica.
