The aim of this essay is to explore the way in which main themes of the novel Great Expectations are presented in the beginning and their connection with the rest of the novel. Before we start the analysis, we should explain the following things: what is a theme? and what is Great Expectations?

According to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus a theme is the main subject of a talk, of a film, of a book in our case. And Great Expectations is a Victorian novel written by Charles Dickens , first published serially in All the Year Round in 1860-61 and issued in a book in 1861.

The most efficient way of analyzing the novel, is to analyze in detail the first sentence and the first page. The first line of the novel Great Expectations obviously points out towards the most important problem of the novel, the problem of identity. The problem of identity or the lack of proper family care is one of the key factors that influenced Pip's life. Another potential solution to the problem of identity is the psychological analyses of the main character

Other themes of the novel, in fact pretty much of them, we will discover in the first chapters of the novel trying to analyze the connection between these and the rest of the novel. These themes seems to sketch an idea of what might happen in continuation of the novel.
